Matthew Hayden sat with Sportstar and did not audition MS Dhoni for the head-coach job. He named Dinesh Karthik. He said Karthik is probably ready, and that a club the size of Chennai Super Kings should carry a local touch, even a Chennai touch, rather than defaulting to another overseas appointment because that is what IPL teams do.

Sportskeeda and SportsTak ran those quotes on 23 and 24 August. Hayden also said Fleming and Dhoni were a beautiful engine room, then called the split a bold and good move. He is not leaking a contract. He is putting a name on a vacancy everyone else has been filling with Englishmen and South Africans.

Why it matters

Stephen Fleming left after 18 years and five titles. IPL 2026 ended with CSK eighth, which is how long partnerships die: slowly, then in a mutual statement. Newsbytes listed Chennai among the clubs that will have a new head coach in 2027. Other desks have already printed Albie Morkel, because he now coaches Joburg Super Kings, and Eoin Morgan, because Ashwin said the name out loud.

Karthik's recent work is not Chepauk. It is Bengaluru. He finished as a player with RCB in 2024 and stayed as mentor and batting coach while that franchise won the next two IPL titles. Hayden is asking CSK to hire the man who just helped the enemy win the thing Chennai cannot currently reach.

Hayden is right about the import habit. Fleming became the job. Replacing him with Morkel or Morgan is how you pretend continuity without doing the harder thing, which is letting a Tamil keeper tell the dressing room the yellow myths are no longer a method. Karthik can do that without a translator. That matters in Chennai in a way it does not in a neutral IPL bubble.

The risk is obvious and a little ugly. Karthik is being sold as local, loyal, and already in Dhoni's orbit. That can mean a coach. It can also mean a mascot with a laptop. RCB used him in a machine that already had Kohli, Patidar and a title hunger. CSK would be asking him to rebuild a side that still waits for a 45-year-old to walk into the hotel. If they hire him to keep Dhoni comfortable, they have not hired a coach. They have hired a buffer.

I would interview him tomorrow. I would not hand him the keys because Hayden misses the sound of a Chennai dressing room. The job after Fleming is to pick XI roles before reputations. Karthik has done finishing. He has not yet shown he can tell a franchise legend to bat at six and like it.

What to watch next

CSK still has to name someone. Watch whether Karthik is in the actual process or only in the former-player column. If the announcement is Morkel or Morgan, Hayden's interview becomes a nice quote on a different hire. If it is Karthik, the first test is who picks the 2027 overseas core: the new coach, or the man whose statue already sits in the argument.
