CSK Is Waiting on a Job Title

Hot News · Chennai Super Kings

Yellow Twitter wanted a coach name. What it got this morning was a freeze: CSK will not move until MS Dhoni tells them whether he wants the dugout or the armchair.

NEWS / CSK Is Waiting on a Job Title

Rohit Juglan, who reports for RevSportz, posted on 29 August that Chennai Super Kings is waiting for MS Dhoni to take the final call on joining as coach or as mentor. The second half of the sentence was the news: until that call, no other activities. Khelnow put the same report on its site before noon IST and tied it to the vacant head-coach job Fleming left behind.

That is not a franchise press note. It is a named IPL reporter putting a freeze on the record. Sportskeeda spent the same morning asking readers whether they wanted Dhoni as head coach or mentor if he does not play in 2027. The poll is not evidence. It is proof the argument had already left the dressing room.

The paper trail underneath the tweet is older and cleaner. On 27 May, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan told Simran Gupta of RevSportz that the club had not sat Dhoni down for a long-term chat, that Dhoni takes these decisions himself, and that Chennai would keep him as a permanent fixture in whatever capacity he wanted, player, coach or mentor. The CEO already handed him the menu. Juglan is now saying the kitchen is closed until he orders.

Why it matters

Fleming's eighteen seasons in yellow ended after IPL 2026. He is England's Test coach. Dhoni did not take the field once last summer. Ruturaj Gaikwad still has the armband. The franchise that used to sell certainty is selling a vacancy and a cliffhanger, and those two products keep bumping into each other.

Times of India journalist Dwaipayan Datta, speaking on Chandresh Narayanan's YouTube show and relayed by CREX on 28 August, still has a 20 September date for naming Fleming's successor. He has Mike Hussey, CSK's batting coach since 2018, as the front-runner, and he has Duncan Fletcher, Kepler Wessels and Paddy Upton out of the race. Those names only work if Dhoni chooses mentor. They collapse if Dhoni chooses the chair Fleming used.

Hussey has a second door open. Fleming has already sounded him out for England's red-ball staff. A man cannot run Chepauk and Lord's in the same winter. That is the quiet pressure sitting behind today's freeze, and it does not need a graphic with lightning bolts.

RS9 IPL analysis

CSK is not interviewing. CSK is waiting to be told what kind of club it is in 2027. If Dhoni takes head coach, the support staff rearranges around a man who has never needed a whiteboard. If he takes mentor, they can finally print Hussey's business card and pretend the last three seasons were a Fleming problem. Either way, Rupa Gurunath's process is a courtesy. The process is Dhoni.

Hayden can keep nominating Dinesh Karthik. Ashwin can keep floating Eoin Morgan. Yellow accounts can keep pasting shortlists. None of that survives a 29 August sentence that says other activities are off. A coach hunt that can be paused by one retired wicketkeeper is not a hunt. It is a holding pattern with better lighting.

There is a cost. Retention lists, trade windows and auction files do not wait for nostalgia. Every week this freeze holds, someone else in the league is actually writing a 2027 XI. Chennai is writing a job description for a man who has not confirmed he wants a job. That is brand management. It is not cricket operations.

What to watch next

The honest checkpoints are a CSK statement with a job title on it, Dhoni speaking in a sentence longer than a wave, and whether Hussey is still in the yellow tracksuit on 20 September. If that date slips, the freeze was the announcement. If Hussey takes England, the internal favourite just walked out of the building Chennai is pretending to staff.
