ESPNcricinfo's Nagraj Gollapudi reported on 19 June that Delhi Capitals would enter IPL 2027 with a new coaching spine: Sourav Ganguly as head coach, Yuvraj Singh as batting coach. The franchise had not announced it then. It has not announced it now. The report said Venugopal Rao, Hemang Badani, Munaf Patel and Ian Bell were unlikely to be kept once JSW took its two-year turn running the men's side.

The picture caught up with the copy on 9 August. India Today put Ganguly and Yuvraj at a Delhi talent camp at Just Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, with Amit Mishra looking at bowlers. That is not a courtesy visit. Men who are 'understood' to be coaches do not fly in to hold a clipboard for fun. CricTracker tied the same camp to the JSW cycle. Newsbytes, on 25 August, was still describing Delhi as moving toward a Ganguly-led structure.

Nothing on delhicapitals.in has made it official. That matters. An ESPN 'understood' plus a trial appearance is a strong developing file. It is not a contract. The jobs remain unsigned in public, which is exactly how a franchise keeps its old staff quiet while the new posters get taken.

Why it matters

Delhi finished sixth last season. The cricket department that produced that table is the one being cleared. Badani had been promoted when Ricky Ponting left. Rao sat as team director. The JSW-GMR ownership split now hands the men's IPL side to JSW for two years. Ganguly is already JSW's director of cricket. He mentored this franchise in 2019, then ran the BCCI, then coached Pretoria Capitals in the SA20. The head-coach job is the first time that CV has to pick an IPL XI on a Tuesday night in Lucknow.

Yuvraj has never held an IPL coaching title. What he has is a private-network batting brand. Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Prabhsimran Singh have all credited him. ESPNcricinfo also reported that he and Ganguly were in the room on the Pant trade. Pant is back at 15 crore after the Lucknow experiment. Axar Patel, in a franchise video in June, spoke as captain and promised Pant a free hand. The leadership chart on the field is therefore already drawn. The one in the dugout is the hole.

That hole is why this story is still moving in late August. Fan accounts keep stacking the same four names: Ganguly, Yuvraj, Axar, Pant. Newsbytes put Delhi next to CSK in a 25 August coaches round-up. The league is in the off-season and Delhi is one of two big clubs yet to print a head coach. The other is Chennai. Only one of them has two World Cup winners standing in a nets session in Bengaluru.

If he is only JSW's man in a branded polo, Delhi has hired a press conference.

Yuvraj as batting coach is the sharper hire. Modern T20 batting is the thing Delhi have been bad at explaining to their own players. A first IPL coaching job is a risk. It is a smaller risk than keeping a backroom that just finished sixth and then adding Pant without changing the voice that talks to him between overs.

The delay in announcing it is not mystery. It is manners. You do not post the new letterhead while Badani is still emptying a desk. You also do not send Ganguly and Yuvraj to a trial if the answer is no. Delhi wants the credit of a reset without the ugliness of a sacking week. That is franchise politics.
